Grupo de Estudo | 3 de Setembro, das 14h30-17h30 em Lisboa

Turning the Wheel of Dharma
I would like to use this time to offer a critical analysis of the first sermon “Turning the Wheel of Dhamma” and other key texts from the Pali Canon in order to start rethinking the foundations of Buddhism from a secular perspective. This will not be an academic presentation but one concerned with how to practise and integrate these ideas in one’s everyday life. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Palestra | 3 de Setembro, das 20h-22h em Lisboa

(organizada pelo projecto “Filosofia e Religião”, do Centro de Filosofia da Universidade de Lisboa, com o apoio da União Budista Portuguesa.)

Introduction to Secular Buddhism
In this talk I will describe my own journey from being a Tibetan and Zen Buddhist monk to a Buddhist lay person living in a modern European society. As a practising Buddhist today, I do not believe it is necessary to accept literally ancient Buddhist doctrines such as rebirth/reincarnation and the law of karma. The primary value of Buddhism, as I see it, is to provide us with tools to address the suffering and crises of our lives in this world, as individuals, members of a society and creatures of an eco-system. It is in this sense that I use the word “secular.”

Retiro | 4-6 de Setembro, em Mafra

Mindfulness as a Way of Life: A Secular Buddhist Retreat
This weekend retreat will consist of periods of silent sitting and walking meditation, interwoven with talks and discussion. The practice of meditation will be that of the “grounding of mindfulness” (satipatthana) as taught in the discourses of the Buddha as found in the Pali canon. (Such meditation is also referred to today as “vipassana.”)
The talks will explore some of the primary teachings of the Buddha, in particular his presentation of the four noble truths as taught in his first sermon, “Turning the Wheel of Dhamma.” I will present the four truths not as propositions to believe but as an ongoing set of existential tasks to be performed. From this perspective, the Buddha’s awakening is no longer understood as a private mystical experience, but as a radically new response to and engagement with the suffering world. This retreat is open to all, with or without any former knowledge of Buddhism.
